Soori says Kottukkaali is a mainstream film focused on content

We previously reported that PS Vinothraj, whose debut film Koozhangal (2021) was India’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards, was directing a new film titled Kottukkaali.

It is scheduled for release on 23 August, where it will compete at the box office with Mari Selvaraj’s Vaazhai.

Produced by Sivakarthikeyan in collaboration with The Little Wave Productions, Kottukkaali stars Soori and Anna Ben in the lead roles. It completed its production earlier in 2023.

According to the makers, Kottukkaali is the first Tamil film to premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The Soori-starrer further was screened at the Transilvania International Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Award, and at the Portugal International Film Festival, where it received the Golden Lynx Award for Best Feature Film.

On Sunday, Soori shared a note on his official X account about his role as Pandi in Kottukkaali. The actor described the project as a mainstream film with a realistic approach, contrasting it with his previous films Viduthalai Part 1 (2023) and Garudan (2024).

Soori highlighted the importance of portraying Pandi’s internal struggle with societal pressures and expressed hope that he would succeed in his performance, urging audiences to see Kottukkaali in theatres.

Described as a drama tackling themes of misogyny, superstition, and complex human emotions, the film’s technical team includes B Sakthivel as the cinematographer and Ganesh Siva as the editor.

In an interview, Soori expressed his desire for the story to resonate with both him and the audience, which he feels Kottukkaali achieves. He described the film as deeply rooted in Tamil sensibilities and life. “I wondered why this story hadn’t been made into a film before. I enjoyed playing Pandi,” he said.

Kottukkaali follows two Indian families arranging the marriage of their daughter Meena and son Pandi. The problem emerges when Meena loves someone from a lower caste.

The story starts after the wedding plans are made, with Meena falling into a deep silence. Her family attributes her condition to possession and seeks an exorcism, hoping it will bring back their happiness.
