Veteran actor Sathyaraj joined the cast of Salman Khan’s upcoming film, Sikandar, alongside Bollywood actor Prateik Babbar. Directed by AR Murugadoss and produced by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, the film stars Salman Khan and Rashmika Mandanna, in the lead roles and promises extensive aerial stunts.

Sathyaraj who started his career as a villain, transitioned to playing heroes before becoming a skilled supporting character artiste, tackling a wide range of roles. The veteran actor seems to be experiencing the best second innings of his career, taking on memorable roles in films like Nanban (2012), Raja Rani (2013), the Baahubali franchise (2015, 2017), Kanaa (2018), and Veetla Vishesham (2022).

Sathyaraj’s most recent Hindi film was the horror-comedy Munjya (2024), while Prateik was last featured in the 2022 web series, India Lockdown.

In an interview, Sathyaraj shared that he never anticipated his second innings to be so rewarding, crediting his filmmakers and their teams for the variety in his films. He claims that acting comes naturally to him and denies doing any homework for his roles. Despite juggling multiple projects, Sathyaraj remains level-headed and effortlessly slips into the character.

‘I become the viewer’

Murugadoss, who wrote the script for Salman’s 2014 movie, Jai Ho, a remake of his Telugu hit, Stalin (2006), is renowned for directing films like Ghajini (2005), Thuppakki (2012), and Sarkar (2018). Known for his high success rate in Indian cinema, Murugadoss always directs from the audience’s perspective. “I don’t make films as a director; I become the viewer and create them the way the audience wants. There’s no secret formula to my success—it’s simple: I make films everyone wants to see,” he said.

Murugadoss, whose last directorial venture was the Tamil action-drama Darbar (2020) starring Rajinikanth, has not released any films in the past three years following, its disappointing performance at the box office.

In an interview, Murugadoss reflected on Darbar’s failure, attributing it to his overconfidence and a mistaken belief in his ability to expedite the writing and filmmaking process.

Murugadoss wanted Salman Khan for his hit film Ghajini (2008), but the project materialised with Aamir Khan. Up next, he has a project with Sivakarthikeyan in the lead, too. Meanwhile, Sikandar is set for an Eid 2025 release.
