Resul Pookutty on Kanguva

Academy Award-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty is known for his candid takes on films. The recent one is on the Suriya starrer Kanguva.

The highly anticipated period drama finally hit the screens on 14 November to mixed reviews. While the audience and critics almost unanimously praised Suriya’s performance, many had complaints over the writing and sound design of the film.

With Kanguva being an action drama, director Siva used loud elements in the film to make it more dramatic. However, this technique wasn’t appreciated by many audience members leading to widespread criticism.

While many cinemagoers took to X, to share their views on the same, one of the prominent responses came from Resul Pookutty.

Sharing a news clip mentioning the criticism, Resul shared his views on the same on his Instagram.

He wrote: “A friend of mine, a re-recording mixer sent me this clip…. It is disheartening to see a review about sound in our popular films like this.”

Resul further questioned, “Our craft and artistry caught up in the loudness war… who is to blame?! The sound guy?! or the innumerable fixes (that) come at the last moment to satiate all insecurities. High time our fraternity to put your foot down and say things loud and clear.”

“No film will have a repeat value if the audience walks out with a headache,” he claimed.
