Kottukkaali to release in August

Director PS Vinothraj returns with his second project, Kottukkaali. The film premiered at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival and was later screened at the Transilvania International Film Festival.

The movie also won the Golden Lynx Award for Best Feature Film at the Portugal International Film Festival. Following its festival run, Kottukkaali is set to release in theatres.

Produced by Sivakarthikeyan’s SK Productions, the actor announced the release date on X, sharing a brief clip from the film and confirming the theatrical debut of Kottukkaali on 23 August.

Starring Soori and Anna Ben, Kottukkaali is a drama that explores themes of misogyny, superstition, and complex human emotions.

The synopsis reads: “Two Indian families are arranging the wedding of their daughter Meena and son Pandi. However, Meena is in love with someone else from a lower caste. The film begins after the arrangements are complete, and Meena has fallen into a deep silence. Her family believes the only explanation for her condition is that she is possessed. Once exorcised, they believe nothing will hinder their happiness.”

Kottukkaali marks Soori’s third lead role, following his debut in Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai Part 1 (2023) and his recent film Garudan (2024).

For Anna Ben, it is her debut in the Tamil film industry. The technical team includes B Sakthivel as the cinematographer and Ganesh Siva as the editor.

PS Vinothraj is known for his critically acclaimed debut Koozhangal (2021), which was India’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.

While working at a DVD shop in Chennai, Vinothraj was introduced to Tamil film industry professionals, leading to his role as an assistant director on two films by Sargunam. After working as an assistant theatre director, he began making his films.

Koozhangal was his feature film debut. The 32-year-old drew inspiration from his family’s struggle with poverty and his sister’s experience with marital abuse to craft the story of an alcoholic father and his young son journeying through a harsh, barren landscape in Tamil Nadu.

The title (Koozhangal) refers to a Tamil synonym for hills and the stones rural people use to quench their thirst on long journeys.

Vinothraj expressed pride, saying, “I feel very proud that this film has won the Tiger Award and is being sent as India’s entry to the Oscars.”
