The film also had a legal hurdle, with an advocate from Tamil Nadu filing a case against Thangalaan movie director Pa Ranjith for allegedly demeaning Vaishnavism. She alleged that the movie, in an attempt to promote Buddhism, has demeaned Vaishnavism as a religion.
However, in October, the Madras High Court dismissed the plea and mentioned that since Thangalaan has already been certified by the Censor Board and released in theatres, a ban on its OTT release cannot be imposed.
Produced by Studio Green’s KE Gnanavelraja, Thangalaan features stellar performances from Vikram, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Daniel Caltagirone, and Pasupathy.
The film, set in the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) and based on real events from the 18th and 19th centuries, explores themes of oppression in a bygone era.
Known for his intense physical transformations, Vikram revealed that he grew his hair and lost weight to portray the character in Thangalaan.
The music was composed by GV Prakash Kumar. Thangalaan also drew accolades for its intense action sequences and Pa Ranjith’s signature storytelling.
“Thangalaan reaffirms Pa Ranjith’s authority as a storyteller, demonstrating his innovative approach to reinterpreting history and making it relevant for contemporary audiences—a quality that was only sporadically evident in his recent works,” reads our review.
On the work front now, Vikram has signed up for his next film Veera Dheera Sooran directed by SU Arun Kumar. The movie stars Dushara Vijayan as the female lead.
