Khatija Rahman, the daughter of double Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman, has explained why her father was absent from the audio launch of her debut film Minmini, which took place on 24 July.

According to Indian Express, Khatija Rahman said she wanted her father to speak about her only after she had proven herself.

Minmini is directed by Halitha Shameem, known for her films Poovarasam Peepee (2014), Sillu Karupatti (2019), Aelay (2021), and an episode in the anthology Putham Pudhu Kaalai Vidiyaadhaa (2022).

Regarding her father’s absence at the audio launch, Khatija Rahman said, “I should start slowly, prove myself, and then have him speak about me. I know how social media reacts, and I have no interest in feeding them. While I can’t avoid criticism or comparisons, I want to establish myself first.”

The singer-musician spoke about struggling with imposter syndrome and the need to let her work speak for itself. She also mentioned that she had no interest in engaging with trolls.

“I had self-doubts when I read comments about my launch as a composer and struggled with imposter syndrome. I realised that my work needed to speak for itself. I’ve not taken this opportunity for granted and have worked hard for it. I hope people offer constructive feedback on Minmini rather than just criticising me on social media,” Khatija Rahman was quoted as saying.

About Minmini

Set for a grand theatrical release on 9 August, Minmini (fireflies) stars Esther Anil of Papanasam (2015) fame, Praveen Kishore, and Gaurav Kalai. This is Halitha Shameem’s dream project.

According to the film’s synopsis, “Minmini is a moving and intense drama by Halitha Shameem, delving into survivor’s guilt with raw honesty and deep emotion, filmed over an extraordinary eight-year period. Shot in two phases, 2015 and 2022, this approach enabled child actors to grow and reprise their roles as adults, providing a remarkable continuity to the story.”

Manoj Paramahamsa is the cinematographer and Raymond Derrick Crasta is the editor. Manoj, along with Murali Krishnan, has also produced the film, which wrapped its post-production in 2023.

In an interview, Halitha said, “Khatija is a fresh voice poised to revolutionise the music industry. Her experience with world music shines through, bringing a global appeal to the soundtrack of this musically demanding film.”
