Actor Nayanthara has restored her Instagram post on “hibiscus tea” benefits following a social media dispute between her nutritionist Munmun Ganeriwal and hepatologist Dr Cyriac Abby Philips (The Liver Doc).
Dr Philips criticised Nayanthara and nutritionist Munmun Ganeriwal for spreading misinformation on social media.
He also debunked their claim that hibiscus tea helps with “diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart-related ailments” using research papers.
After being called out by The Liver Doc on X, many believed Nayanthara deleted her post on hibiscus tea. However, she only archived it and eventually restored it.
However, her nutritionist Munmun Ganeriwal later defended her claims by sharing journal links to support them.
After Ganeriwal’s statement, Nayanthara restored her post and reposted her nutritionist’s explanation, adding, “Whoever needs an explanation, please go through this post.” She also shared a cryptic note about the incident.
Nayanthara claimed this herbal concoction could control blood sugar, manage high blood pressure, and combat acne. The Liver Doc challenged all these claims.
The Liver Doc responded by sharing Ganeriwal’s post on X, criticising her again. He claimed that Nayanthara indirectly “abused” him and expressed disappointment while debunking her claims.
“If she had said hibiscus tea is tasty, that would have been fine. But no, they had to flaunt their health illiteracy and claim it helps with diabetes, high blood pressure, acne, has antibacterial properties, and protects against the flu. None of these claims are proven,” he wrote.
The Liver Doc accused the actress of promoting her dietician, Munmun Ganeriwal, and cautioned his followers against daily consumption of hibiscus tea.
He wrote, “A 2021 Cochrane meta-analysis found insufficient evidence to determine if roselle effectively manages or lowers blood pressure compared to a placebo in people with hypertension. Therefore, ‘Dr’ Nayanthara’s claim is false.”
1/8 Ok, so after the actress Nayantara indirectly “abused” me and silently deleted her post on hibiscus tea benefits, her “celebrity nutritionist” Ms. Munmum Ganeriwal, whom I called a “quack” has responded strongly against me…proving that she is indeed a “quack.

Nayanthara claimed this herbal concoction could control blood sugar, manage high blood pressure, and combat acne. The Liver Doc challenged all these claims.
Citing medical publications, he stated that the drink’s alleged benefits for lowering blood pressure and blood sugar are unproven. He also noted that no studies confirm hibiscus tea prevents acne, has antibacterial properties, or guards against seasonal infections in humans.
Previously, The Liver Doc harshly criticised Samantha Ruth Prabhu for promoting hydrogen peroxide nebulisation, calling her a “health illiterate.”
