The critically acclaimed Tamil film Kottukkaali, starring Anna Ben and Soori, is set to make its international streaming debut on Simply South on 27 September.
Directed by PS Vinothraj, known for his award-winning film Koozhangal (Pebbles), Kottukkaali was well-received by critics and audiences alike. It garnered praise for its strong performances and compelling narrative.
Following its theatrical release on 23 August, the debut of Kottukkaali on Simply South allows the audience outside India to experience this powerful story. However, an official release date for Indian OTT platforms is yet to be announced.
The film centres around Meena, a young woman struggling with the societal pressures of her family after falling in love with a boy from a lower caste.
Silenced by her family, Meena is thought to be possessed. Her family seeks the help of a shaman. The story unfolds as Meena embarks on a road trip with her family and Pandi, played by Soori, who has been chosen to marry her.
The raw and gripping portrayal of caste-based struggles and family dynamics in Kottukkaali struck a chord with audiences.
Actor Sivakarthikeyan, under his banner Sivakarthikeyan Productions, produced the film.

Upon its release, the film was lauded for its direction, storytelling, and performances, particularly that of Soori. The actor is primarily known for his comedic roles but took on a more serious character in this Tamil movie.
The technical team behind Kottukkaali played a pivotal role in adding depth to the film. Cinematographer B Sakthivel’s visuals and Ganesh Siva’s editing work captured the intense moments.
While Kottukkaali lacks a traditional musical score, the sound design by Suren G and S Alagia Koothan and production sound mixing by Raghav Ramesh, added to its stark and realistic portrayal of events.
“Kottukkaali invites the audience to fill in the gaps through minimalism rather than silence. Its effectiveness and maturity lie in its subtle approach, avoiding didacticism and delivering its story with effortless simplicity. The film seems within reach, yet the closer we get, the more it eludes us. What’s not to like?” read our review.
