Director Atlee is currently promoting his upcoming Bollywood movie, Baby John starring Varun Dhawan and Keerthy Suresh. As part of the promotions, the film team was at Kapil Sharma’s The Great Indian Kapil Show.
A clip from the episode is now viral on social media, due to which the host and comedian Kapil Sharma is facing criticism and backlash.
In the clip, Kapil Sharma asks Atlee, “Actually you are so young, and you have become a producer-director. Has it ever happened that you went to meet a star and they didn’t recognise you? Have they asked where is Atlee?”
However, the director clapped back, “Sir, in a way I understood your question. I’ll try to answer. I am very thankful to AR Murugadoss sir because he produced my first film. He asked for the script, but he didn’t see how I am looking and whether I am capable of it or not, but he loved my narration.”
“I think the world should see that, we should not judge by appearance. You have to judge by your heart,” Atlee further emphasised.

While Atlee’s response received applause from the all-round for answering back, Kapil Sharma was criticised for a subtle dig at the director’s appearance.
Appreciating Atlee, a user commented, “Atlee handled it beautifully by answering straight to a question asked indirectly.”

Singer Chinmayi Sripada commenting on the video said, “Will they never stop these crass and racist jibes at his skin color in the name of ‘comedy’? Someone with the amount of influence and clout like Kapil Sharma saying something like this is disappointing and unfortunately, not surprising.”

Baby John marks Atlee’s second foray into Bollywood after the massive success of Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jawan (2023), which became one of the highest-grossing films, earning over ₹1000 crore globally.
Baby John is a remake of Atlee’s 2016 Tamil film Theri, which starred Vijay, Samantha, and Amy Jackson in the lead roles. The Bollywood adaptation features Jackie Shroff and Rajpal Yadav in key roles.
The film boasts music composed by Thaman S, cinematography by Kiran Koushik, and editing by Ruben. Produced by Murad Khetani, Priya Atlee, and Jyoti Deshpande, Baby John is set to release in theatres on 25 December.
