Kamal Haasan starts dubbing for 'Thug Life'. (X)
Kamal Haasan has started dubbing for Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, with the team sharing a video of him entering the studio. The film is in brisk production, and Silambarasan has also recently begun dubbing.
Thug Life is highly anticipated and expected to be released later this year, though an official announcement is still pending.
The most-awaited film reunites Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after their 1987 classic Nayakan.
Produced by Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam, Mahendran, and Siva Ananth under Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies, Thug Life will be presented by Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies.
The team includes double Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman. Cinematographer Ravi K Chandran, who worked on Mani Ratnam’s Kannathil Muthamittal (2002) and Aaytha Ezhuthu (2004), handles the camera work.
Action choreography is by Anbariv masters, known for their work on Kamal Haasan’s Vikram (2022). Sharmishta Roy is the production designer and Ekha Lakhani is the costume designer.
The beautifully shot announcement video about dubbing features Kamal Haasan as Rangaraya Sakthivel Naicker, echoing his iconic character Sakthivel Naicker from Nayakan.
“It seems they wrote on my forehead at birth that Sakthivel Naicker was a criminal, a goonda, a Yakuza,” Kamal says, dressed in a white robe as he faces a group of men. When they approach, he removes the robe to reveal a distinctive white outfit and proceeds to beat them up.
We’ll have to wait and see if Thug Life is connected to the Nayakan universe.

In an interview, Anbariv masters called Thug Life an “action-packed feast” and assured it would meet Hollywood standards.
The duo is adapting to new technologies to enhance their craft. “Previously, a hero jumping from 10 feet was a major event, meticulously planned. Today, such sequences are easily shot with available technology and tools. We also use robotic arms and cranes to simplify filming intense fight scenes,” Anbariv was quoted, as saying.
In another interview, producer Siva Ananth described the film as “fantastic” and said it is “shaping up well”, adding that fans will love Thug Life.
The film, Kamal Haasan’s 234th project, also stars Abhirami, Trisha, Nasser, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, and Gautham Karthik.
In other news, Kamal Haasan is expected to skip hosting this season of Bigg Boss Tamil. Reports suggest he will travel abroad to study AI, as he is eager to explore and integrate the concept into his work. Official confirmation is still pending.
