Kanguva, directed by Siruthai (2011) Siva, featuring Suriya, finally, has a release date. On 27 June, the makers announced that the action-drama would hit the screens, on 10 October, with an official poster. This release will coincide with Superstar Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan, directed by TJ Gnanavel of Jai Bhim (2021)-fame. This unforeseen clash during the Dasara holidays has generated significant buzz in the industry.

In April, Lyca Productions revealed a poster of Vettaiyan and announced that the film would be released in October. During his June trip to the Himalayas, Rajinikanth told a yogi that Vettaiyan would be released around Dasara. He mentioned, “I’ve finished filming my scenes, but the rest of the cast is still working. The movie is scheduled to be released around 10 October.”

Kanguva was scheduled for a summer 2024 release but was postponed due to delays in shooting and post-production. The makers were also seeking an ideal release date, as it is being marketed as a pan-Indian venture. Madan Karky has penned the dialogues while Adi Narayana wrote the screenplay.

Bollywood actor Disha Patani makes her Tamil debut as the female lead in Kanguva, while Bobby Deol portrays the antagonist. The cinematography for the film is handled by Vetri Palanisamy, and the soundtrack is composed by Devi Sri Prasad.

Kanguva to release in multiple languages

Touted as a “saga of a mighty valiant hero”, Kanguva will feature Suriya in six roles. It will be released in 10 languages including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi.

The official synopsis of Kanguva, describes it as a tale spanning 500 years, from the 1700s to 2023, about a hero tasked with completing an unfinished mission. Following its theatrical release, the film will be available for streaming on Prime Video.

In recent times, no major Tamil films featuring big heroes, have been released on the same day. This has led to significant disruptions in the Tamil film industry, as screens and showtimes are split.

The superstardom of actors has risen, and the business of big films has evolved. Ideally, a major film requires a solo-wide release for a successful opening weekend. The business inevitably gets divided when two big films are released on the same day.

“Vettaiyan was the first to announce a Dasara release, followed by Kanguva. The current crisis in the industry stems from an ego battle among stars vying for box-office supremacy. Both films are expected to have strong bookings. Fans are eagerly awaiting the box-office clash between Superstar and Suriya,” said a producer, on the condition of anonymity.

In 2021, Rajinikanth’s Annaatthe hit the screens on 4 November, while Jai Bhim, premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 2 November. The Suriya-starrer dropped on OTT, bypassing a traditional theatrical release.

Rajinikanth is accompanied by a diverse ensemble cast in Vettaiyan, which includes Amitabh Bachchan, Manju Warrier, Rana Daggubati, Fahadh Faasil, Dushara Vijayan, Rithika Singh, and VJ Rakshan. Anirudh Ravichander handles the music for Vettaiyan, marking his fourth collaboration with Rajinikanth, following the success of Petta (2019), Darbar (2020), and Jailer (2023).
