On day two, Shankar’s Indian 2, starring Kamal Haasan, saw earnings dip to over ₹42 crore, according to Sacnilk. The sequel to the 1996 film, Indian, earned ₹18.2 crore across all languages in India, a 28.91% drop from day one, bringing its total to ₹43.8 crore.
The film was also released in Hindi as Hindustani 2 and in Telugu as Bharateeyudu 2.
On its second day, Indian 2 earned ₹13.7 crore for the Tamil version, showing a decline. The Hindi version’s earnings, however, increased to ₹1.3 crore from ₹1.2 crore on the first day.
Earnings from other states, excluding Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala, rose to ₹1.7 crore from ₹1.6 crore. In Tamil Nadu, Indian 2 achieved its highest total with ₹25.1 crore, earning ₹12.1 crore on the second day.
Kamal Haasan reprises his role as Senapathy in Indian 2, which clashed at the box office with Sudha Kongara’s Sarfira. A remake of the National Award-winning Tamil film Soorarai Pottru (2020), the film stars Akshay Kumar, Radhika Madan, Paresh Rawal, and Seema Biswas.
Kamal Haasan said that Indian 2 has exceeded the first part in terms of budget and technical aspects. Describing his transformation in the film as “gratifying,” he added in an interview, “If the result is gratifying, all the pain and hard work is worth it.”
Indian 2 received mixed reviews, even among Kamal Haasan fans. Some felt it didn’t meet expectations, while others criticised its three-hour runtime.
In response to feedback, the makers decided to cut 20 minutes of footage. The trimmed version, reportedly running in theatres from 14 July, reduces the runtime from three hours and four minutes to two hours and forty minutes. Official confirmation is still awaited.
