'Indian 2' box-office collection dips on day 5. (X)
Indian 2 has had a disappointing start at the box office, earning ₹3 crore on its first Tuesday (16 July) and totalling a collection of ₹65.15 crore in India, over the past five days.
Initial expectations of crossing ₹100 crore in its opening weekend have not materialised, with projections now suggesting it will reach this milestone by its second weekend.
Despite generating significant buzz before its release, Shankar-directed Indian 2 failed to live up to expectations at the box office in India, largely due to negative word-of-mouth affecting its performance.
As reported by Sacnilk, Indian 2 grossed a collection of ₹25.6 crore on 12 July, ₹18.2 crore on 13 July, and ₹15.35 crore on 14 July. However, it saw a sharp decline thereafter, earning just ₹3 crore on both 15 and 16 July.
The film’s performance has been disappointing even in the Tamil market, where it typically garners its largest audience.
Of the total ₹65.15 crore collected over five days, ₹45.55 crore originated from the Tamil market, which saw a significant drop to ₹3 crore on Monday and Tuesday.
Indian 2 also struggled to gain traction with Hindi audiences, gathering only ₹4.65 crore from that region. The film faces stiff competition from Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD, which continues to excel in the Northern region.
Meanwhile, the makers of Indian 2 have trimmed the film by 12 minutes. The Kamal Haasan-starrer was initially released with a runtime of three hours and five minutes. As the audience complained about the duration, the makers decided to edit out 12 minutes of footage.
Earlier, it was rumoured that the makers would trim 20 minutes from the film.

Indian 2 is one of Tamil cinema’s highly anticipated films this year. It marks the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Shankar after 28 years. This one serves as the sequel to the 1996 cult classic Indian and is a joint production of Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies.
In the movie, Kamal Haasan reprises the role of Senapathy—affectionately known as Indian thatha among fans. He combats corruption using India’s ancient martial art form, varma kalai.
During promotional tours, the Indian 2 team frequently addressed questions about the decision to bring back Senapathy, who, according to the plot, is 106 years old.
At the press conference in June, Kamal jokingly remarked that he would still like to act even at the age of 120.
The release of Bad Newz and Darling on 19 July is expected to reduce the chances of Indian 2 performing well in the Hindi and Telugu markets respectively.
