Garudan streams on Amazon Prime Video

Soori’s latest outing Garudan, which hit the screens on 31 May, is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video from Wednesday, 3 July.

Written and directed by RS Durai Senthilkumar, the Tamil film garnered positive reviews from critics and also received commercial success at the box office.

The trailer of Garudan introduces us to the story of two close friends—Aadhi (Sasikumar) and Karuna (Unni)—along with Karuna’s steadfast protector Sokkan (Soori). It also suggests that the antagonists’ sinister scheme puts Sokkan in a difficult position, where he must navigate between loyalty and justice.

The promotional material teased an action-packed drama filled with emotional intensity.

RS Durai Senthilkumar previously helmed Ethir Neechal (2013) and Kodi (2016). He expressed confidence in Garudan‘s ability to attract audiences to theatres.

Before the release of the film, the filmmaker spoke about Soori’s performance as a standout aspect to look forward to. “Moreover, similar to how specific moments had a profound impact on the success of Kodi, Garudan will have several such impactful moments.”

Garudan review: Soori soars high, yet again, as a hero

Garudan casting

The casting of Garudan has been a focal point of its hype. Sasikumar’s role was an obvious choice, given his established reputation in rural action films.

Speaking about the casting process, the makers aimed for an intriguing choice for the character opposite Sasikumar. Their attention turned to Unni Mukundan after the success of the Tamil-dubbed version of the Malayalam film Malikappuram (2022).

Soori addressed perceptions about him doing consecutive action films, attributing it to Viduthalai Part 1 (2023) and the raw vibe seen in the promotional material for Kottukaali (which is yet to be released in theatres).

“After Vetri sir’s film, I’ve been mostly approached for lead roles. While I’m pleased with that, I’m still open to doing a full-fledged comedy film, although such opportunities haven’t come my way yet,” the actor said.

Garudan demonstrates that Soori is here to stay as a leading man. This wasn’t expected, but he is electric in action sequences,” read our review.

Garudan features an ensemble cast, including Sshivada Nair, Mime Gopi, Samuthirakani, RV Udayakumar, Vadivukkarasi, Roshni Haripriyan, Brigida Saga, and Revathi Sharma.

Produced by K Kumar and co-presented by Vetrimaaran’s Grassroot Film Company and Lark Studios, the Tamil film features music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, cinematography by Arthur A Wilson, and editing by Pradeep E Ragav.
