South Indian actor Nayanthara on Saturday, 16 November, penned a strongly worded open letter against actor-director Dhanush for not letting her use film footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan (2015) – for her wedding documentary titled Nayanthara— Beyond the Fairytale which will stream on Netflix from Monday, 18 November.
Naanum Rowdy Dhaan stars Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara in lead roles and is directed by Nayanthara’s husband Vignesh Shivan. It is produced by Dhanush.
In the missive published on her Instagram account, the “Lady Superstar” said that despite being a self-made woman, and making a mark for herself in the industry with her work and ethics, she faced multiple challenges while making the documentary.
“It took a whole team of collaborators and film friends to pull together the project through all the difficulties that were thrown at us,” she noted.
Criticising Dhanush for festering vengeance against her and her family, Nayanthara wrote: “The vengeance that you have been festering against the film, my partner and I, doesn’t just affect us but the people who have given their effort and time towards this project.”
“This Netflix Documentary about me, my life, my love and marriage includes clips of many of my industry well-wishers who have graciously contributed and memories from multiple films, but sadly does not include the most special and important film, Naanum Rowdy Dhaan.”
She further revealed that they have been requesting Dhanush to let them use the songs from the 2015 film for two years. Nayanthara however stated that Dhanush has refused to give the No Objection Certificate.
“After two long years of battling it out with you for an NOC (No Objection Certificate) and waiting for your approval for our NetFlix documentary release, we finally decided to give up, re-edit and settle for the current version since you declined to permit the usage of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan songs or visual cuts, even the photographs to say the least despite multiple requests.” She added that the refusal to use the songs in their documentary broke her heart.
She further claimed that the refusal was not due to business or monetary reasons but was only to vent out Dhanush’s personal grudge against them, that he has deliberately remained indecisive this long.
Nayanthara also got support from Parvathy Tiruvothu. The latter shared the post on her stories with a hats off emoticon.
The actor also revealed that she and her team were served legal notice claiming a sum of ₹10 crore for using three seconds of BTS video footage of the film, that were shot on their personal devices.
Further calling out Dhanush for an “all-time low”, Nayanthara said, “This speaks so much about your character. I wish you were half the person you portray to be on stage in audio launches in front of your innocent fans but clearly, you do not practice what you preach, at least not for me and my partner.”
“Your refusal to give NOC for the use of elements of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan for our Netflix documentary might be justified by you to the Courts from a copyright angle but I wish to remind you that there is a moral side to it, which has to be defended in the court of God,” the letter further read.
Nayanthara further questioned, “Does a producer become an Emperor controlling the lives, freedom and liberty of all the persons in the set? Any deviation from the Emperor’s dictum attracts legal ramifications?”
She ended the letter by wishing, “Through this letter I only wish and pray that you come to peace with your inner self over the success of some people whom you knew from the past.”
