Director Shankar alleges copyright infringement on 'Vel Paari' novel

Indian 2 (2024) director S Shankar has recently expressed his outrage on social media over the unauthorised use of scenes from Su Venkatesan’s iconic Tamil novel “Veera Yuga Nayagan Vel Paari“. The filmmaker holds the copyright for the novel.

The celebrated director accused the makers of an unnamed upcoming film of plagiarising key scenes from the novel, particularly highlighting a recently released trailer.

In his post, Shankar made it clear that he is the official copyright holder of the “Veera Yuga Nayagan Vel Paari” novel and that many scenes from it are being used without his permission. He took offence to a particular scene featured in a recent movie trailer.

“As the copyright holder of Su Venkatesan’s iconic Tamil novel ‘Veera Yuga Nayagan Vel Paari‘, I’m disturbed to see key scenes being ripped off and used without permission in many movies. Really upset to see an important key scene from the novel in a recent movie trailer,” wrote Shankar.

In his post, Shankar also issued a stern warning to those involved in unauthorised adaptations of “Vel Paari“. He urged filmmakers and creators to respect intellectual property rights.

“Kindly refrain from using scenes from the novel in movies, web series, and any medium. Respect creators’ rights! Refrain from unauthorized adaptations of scenes. Refrain from infringement or face legal action,” his post read.

Fans and netizens react

In the aftermath of Shankar’s post, there has been growing speculation among netizens that the films in question might include Suriya’s Kanguva and Jr NTR’s Devara: Part 1. Both films released trailers recently, adding to the curiosity. However, no official statement has been made regarding the identity of the film that Shankar alluded to in his post.

Meanwhile, Shankar’s fans and Tamil cinema audiences rallied behind him and supported the director’s stand against copyright infringement.

However, some netizens came to the defence of Devara and its makers. They argued that the film predominantly features water-based action stunts, which differ from the scenes in “Vel Paari“.

Despite this defence, some netizens drew comparisons between certain scenes in the “Vel Paari” novel and the Devara: Part 1 trailer, suggesting possible similarities.

Devara director Koratala Siva and his team are yet to respond to the allegations. The lack of official comment only fuelled speculation further.

On the work front, Shankar is gearing up for the highly anticipated releases of Game Changer, starring Ram Charan and Kiara Advani, and Indian 3 headlined by Kamal Haasan.
