Tamil watchlist for June 2024

It’s been a terrible year for Tamil cinema, with only one genuine blockbuster in the form of Sundar C’s horror franchise—Aranmanai 4. The film recently breached the ₹100-crore club globally and continues to have a successful hold in cinemas.

Till about a few days ago, the month of June 2024 looked promising as Dhanush’s second directorial Raayan was scheduled to hit the screens in the second week.

Slated for release on 13 June, Raayan is said to have been postponed to July.

Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 was also originally slated for June release but has been pushed by a month for reasons unknown.

This means the only known release of June will be Vijay Sethupathi’s  5oth film—Maharaja.

Let’s check out the Tamil watchlist for June 2024:

Anjaamai

One of the confirmed releases of June is SP Subburaman’s Anjaamai, a story of a father and a lawyer fighting for the abolition of NEET exams.

The film’s trailer was released on 28 May and it was hard-hitting and powerful.

The trailer features Vidaarth as a theater artist and Vani Bhojan as his wife. Their son is an extremely bright student who struggles to clear the NEET exam for medicine.

When all his options run out, we see Vidaarth taking the services of Rahman, a lawyer, to fight against the need for NEET.

Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, the makers are yet to officially announce the release date. However, it has been confirmed that the film will hit the screens this June.

Mazhai Pidikatha Manithan

Vijay Antony’s long-delayed Mazhai Pidikatha Manithan, directed by Vijay Milton, has also confirmed June release after the postponement of Raayan and Indian 2.

The Tamil film has been in the making for a long time.

Tipped to be an action-thriller, Mazhai Pidikatha Manithan also stars Sathyaraj, Sarath Kumar, Murali Sharma, and Saranya Ponvannan.

Kannada actor Dhananjaya plays the prime antagonist, while Megha Akash plays the leading lady in it.

Maharaja

Vijay Sethupathi’s highly anticipated 50th film—Maharaja, is confirmed to hit the screens on 13 June.

Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan of Kurangu Bommai (2017) fame, the Tamil flick also casts Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, and Natarajan Subramaniam.

Last September (2023), the makers released the first-look poster of Maharaja.

The poster features Vijay Sethupathi, covered in blood with a sickle in his hand and seated on what appears to be a barber’s chair.

Weapon

Weapon is tipped to be India’s first superhuman saga.

Directed by Guhan Senniappan, its makers announced on Wednesday that the film will be released on 7 June.

In the movie, Sathyaraj plays a superhuman with special powers that make him invincible.

Weapon‘s story follows a team of agents who have to track and capture or kill Sathyaraj’s character.

The Tamil film also stars filmmaker Rajiv Menon and Vasanth Ravi of Jailer fame in key roles.

Haraa

Haraa is set for release in theatres on 7 June, alongside Sathyaraj-Vasanth Ravi’s Weapon.

The makers revealed that the film has successfully passed censorship requirements, securing a U/A certificate.

Featuring Anumol as the leading lady, Haraa is both written and directed by Vijay Sri G.

As per the makers, the Tamil film aims to raise awareness about IPC sections and important concepts such as distinguishing between good touch and bad touch.

It marks Mohan’s return to the silver screen, after his last appearance in 2008’s Sutta Kozhi.

Haraa also features the nonagenarian actor Charuhasan in a significant role. The supporting cast includes Yogi Babu, Singam Puli, Deepa, Mime Gopi, Chaams, and Santhosh Prabhakar.

Director Vijay Sri G, known for his works like Dha Dha 87 (2019) and Powder (2022), persuaded Mohan to take on the lead role in his action film.

Vijay Sri stated that Mohan had received numerous offers from various directors, but none of them piqued his interest until he came across the script of Haraa.

Bankrolled by Kovai SP Mohanraj and Jayasree Vijay, the movie has editing by Guna, music by Rashaanth Arwin, and cinematography by Mano Dinakaran and Prahath Muniyasami.
