Tamil director Mohan arrested following controversial remarks on 'Pazhani Panchamirtham'

Director Mohan, a well-known figure in the South Indian film industry, has found himself at the centre of a controversy due to his recent remarks regarding the sacred Panchamirtham, a divine offering served at the Pazhani Temple in Tamil Nadu.

Known for speaking his mind on social media, Mohan’s statements often garner attention. However, his latest comments about the use of contraceptives in the Panchamirtham have sparked widespread debate and led to legal consequences.

Mohan’s claim that contraceptive medicine was allegedly incorporated into the Panchamirtham has caused an uproar. His statement followed recent headlines about adulterated ghee being used in Tirupati laddus.

His remarks were met with backlash from devotees and the general public alike, leading to calls for action. The Tamil Nadu government responded promptly, and police officials arrested Mohan at his residence in Kasimedu, Chennai, on the morning of 24 September. He was taken into custody and handed over to the authorities for further investigation.

However, the Tamil Nadu police are yet to release a formal statement on the specific charges against the director.

Meanwhile, his arrest triggered a wave of reactions from various quarters. Notably, Trichy District SP Varun Kumar confirmed that Mohan was arrested in Chennai and would be brought to Trichy for further legal procedures.

BJP President Ashvathaman Allimuthu took to the social media platform X to criticise the arrest. He claimed that Mohan was taken into custody without prior notice or formal information given to his family.

“This is against the Supreme Court order,” Allimuthu stated, accusing the Tamil Nadu police of conducting “illegal arrests” under Chief Minister MK Stalin’s rule. He further alleged that the current government is targeting dissidents and that Mohan’s family was left uninformed about his whereabouts.

Mohan is a prominent director in Tamil cinema, with films such as Pazhya Vannarapettal, Draupati, Rudhra Thandavam, and Bakasuran to his credit.

He recently began shooting his new film, marking his third collaboration with actor Richard Rishi, after the success of Draupati and Rudhra Thandavam.
