He was last seen in the successful web series, Suzhal: The Vortex, released on Amazon Prime in 2022, in which he played Sakkarai, a police sub-inspector.

Now, actor Kathir is back in the thriller Yugi, which is set to hit the theatres on 18 November.

It is directed by Malayalam director Zac Harriss, who is making his Tamil debut.

The movie also stars Narain, Natarajan Subramaniam (Natty), the late Prathap Pothen, Pavithra Lakshmi, Anandhi and Muneesh Kanth.

In an exclusive chat with South First, the talented Pariyerum Perumal star talks about Yugi and what the audience can expect this Friday.

Q. What is Yugi all about?

A. Yugi is a suspense thriller. There are seven characters in the film and each one of them is important. It is not the usual crime drama. It has a gripping screenplay written by Bhagyaraj.

Coincidentally, the movie touches upon surrogacy which is a hot topic right now. The film’s story and surrogacy being in the news are accidental. So, it will be engaging for the audience.

It also has an emotional connection as Yugi speaks about the difference between the rich people and the poor, and how they use money in their favour.

Q. You play a cop in this film like Suzhal. Tell us about the role.

A. After going through the script, I thought of not doing Yugi because of the cop’s role. But the characterisation is completely different from that of Sakkarai.

In this movie, I play a cop who gets suspended due to a ‘silai kaduthal’ (smuggling of ancient statues) case. You won’t see a bit of Sakkarai here!

Q. What made you say “yes” to this film?

A. Yugi is an engaging fast-paced thriller. Its twists and turns make it gripping.

The story is really different and the way it has been taken is like a Malayalam film where all the characters are central to the story.

Yugi was simultaneously shot in Malayalam and Tamil, and I play the lead in the Tamil version.

Narain sir told me that I’d be perfect for the role and I thought it would be good to be part of this project.

Q. How was it working with debutant director Zac Harriss?

A. Zac Harriss directed Adrishyam in Malayalam. He was open to our suggestions and ideas. That was a good thing.

We shot it in Malayalam and Tamil simultaneously and that was a little tough as an actor as it can affect the acting process.

Q. How were Natty and Narain in the set?

A. Both Natty sir and Narain are incredible actors and interesting.

Narain is super funny. When it came to my closeups, he used to give funny expressions to distract me.

We had a great time on set. He told me a lot of stories about working in the Malayalam cinema.

Natty is super cool and he has a wealth of knowledge. It was wonderful listening to his experiences.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have any scenes with Pratap Pothen sir so sadly I didn’t get to meet him.
