Music is key in rom-coms, and 'Swathi Muthyam' is not quite up to the mark on this count. But tight editing keeps interest from flagging.

Swathi Muthyam is a small film that is jostling for space with two big budget, highly-publicised releases on Dasara — Chiranjeevi’s Godfather and Nagarjuna’s The Ghost.

And yet, it manages to hold it its own.

The film sees senior producer Bellamkonda Suresh’s son Ganesh debuting as hero, while Varsha Bollamma is the female lead. This small movie, bankrolled by a big production house, Sithara Entertainments, has positioned itself as a romantic comedy, contrasting nicely with the high-decibel action of the other two releases.

Read on to find out if this rom-com impresses.

Story and backdrop

The story of Swathi Muthyam unfolds in Pithapuram, a remote town of Andhra Pradesh.

Bala (Bellamkonda Ganesh), who works as an engineer in the Electricity Department, meets Bhagyalakshmi (Varsha Bollamma) as part of his marriage trials.

After initial hiccups and convincing their parents, Bala and Bhagya get ready for marriage. But a shocking twist comes in the form of Shailaja (Divya Sripada), who stops the marriage.

What twist does Bala and Bhagya’s lives take and how they come out of their problems and finally unite is the basic premise of Swathi Muthyam.

Screenplay and treatment

As with most rom-coms, Swathi Muthyam has a wafer-thin storyline. So the director has to keep audience interested in the movie with screenplay and treatment, which Lakshman K Krishna has done effectively.

He added a “surrogacy” angle and ensured that the whole story is narrated in an entertaining way through comic conversations between characters and creating comedy out of confusion.

While we have seen this in many movies earlier, the director has presented it in a refreshing way.

Bellamkonda Ganesh, in his debut as hero, is okay as a “do nothing wrong”, sincere guy, who is trusted by everyone for his good nature.

As most of the movie revolves around him, he could have done even better.

Varsha Bollamma is fine within the limits of her role.

In the case of character artistes, Rao Ramesh and Goparaju Ramana are very impressive. Both steal the show in some scenes.

This situational comedy also has Vennela Kishore, Naresh, Subbaraju, Harshavardhan and others, who are all seasoned performers and have done their roles effortlessly.

Technical Crafts

Music plays a very crucial role in romantic comedies and Mahati Swara Sagar has not quite delivered.

There are just three songs, and they are just about okay. Both the songs and the background score should have been better.

Cinematography by Surya is fine, while the editor, Navin Nooli, needs to be appreciated for keeping the movie compact. With a run time of 1hour 58 minutes, the movie has no dull moments

Final take

Swathi Muthyam is a decent romantic comedy, which will entertain an audience interested in feel-good movies. Both families and youth can watch this festival release.
