Producer Sivalenka Krishna Prasad of Sridevi Movies, best known for having bankrolled films like Samantha-starrer Yashoda (2022), has acquired the all-India theatrical rights of legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Muthiah Muralidaran’s biopic 800.

Making the announcement on Wednesday, 23 August, the producer said, “Bringing Muthiah Muralidaran’s life onto the big screens is a challenging task. He has been through so many tough situations and stood strong.”

He further added, “He holds the record for taking 800 wickets and our film title commemorates the same. The film covers his journey from his childhood to becoming a cricket legend.”

Sivalenka Krishna Prasad recalled the success he tasted as a producer with Yashoda, a pan-Indian release.

“Now, it is the turn of 800, and I’m proud to be releasing it across India. Post-production is going on and we are planning to release the film in October. The trailer will be out in September,” he said.

800 wickets

The film has been titled 800 to indicate a unique landmark achieved by the Sri Lankan cricketer.

Muthiah Muralidaran holds the record for having taken over 800 wickets in International cricket, a feat no other cricketer ever achieved.

Movie Train Motion Pictures is producing this film, which is being directed by MS Sripathy.

The film has Slumdog Millionaire (2008)-fame actor Madhur Mittal and Tamil actress Mahima Nambiar playing the lead.

Booker Prize winner Shehan Karunatilaka is the co-writer.

800 is being originally shot in Tamil and also released in Telugu, Hindi, and English languages.

It has been extensively shot in Sri Lanka, England, Australia, Kochin, Chandigarh, and Chennai on a lavish budget.

The movie also features Naren, Nassar, Vela Ramamoorthy, Ritvika, Arul Das, Hari Krishnan, and Sharath Lohithaswa.

It may be recalled that actor Vijay Sethupathi was initially signed up to play the character of Muthiah Muralidaran in this biopic.

However, Sethupathi chose to opt out of the project after some groups took exception to his playing the Sri Lankan Tamil cricketer, who is seen as a huge supporter of former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

It was during Mahinda Rajapaksa’s regime that lakhs of innocent Tamils were killed as part of the Sri Lankan Civil War.
