Rajamouli

A Rajamouli documentary on the cards?

After a tepid September, SouthScope is happy to announce that things are once again looking up for Southern cinema.

Ponniyin Selvan-1 and Godfather are doing roaring business, while Kannada cinema delivered a gem of a film that has surprised both viewers, critics and the trade. Kantara, seeped in Kannada culture, will be remembered for long.

But amidst all this is talk of a documentary on a man who is in no small way responsible for the blockbuster aura that cinema from the South has acquired of late. Yes, we speak of none other than superstar director SS Rajamouli.

Rajamouli, of course, needs no introduction. Both the Baahubali series and RRR are films that are popular globally and audiences across the world have been praising the director for making such visual wonders.

Starting his career as a TV serial director, and getting his first break as a film director with Student No 1, he has come a long way. His recent blockbuster RRR has been submitted in all major categories for the Oscar Awards 2023. And did you know he is a screenwriter too?

So a documentary on the man definitely makes sense, though it is certainly unusual to make one on a living legend who is still in his prime with, possibly, his best work ahead of him.

But we hear that the documentary recently went on floors in Hyderabad and is going ahead at a brisk pace. Rajamouli, who is busy working on his next film, starring Mahesh Babu, is a expected to make time to take part in the filming.

According to one report, the documentary is being bankrolled by Raghav Khanna under the Riverland Entertainment banner.

So while there is no “official” word on the documentary from either the makers or from Rajamouli, we just hope the news is true.

The Kantara phenomenon

You cannot keep a good film down. And the reason for that is something called word-of-mouth.

Kantara

Kannada film Kantara, which had a quiet release last week, is doing extremely well at the local box office. Written, directed and acted by Rishab Shetty, the film, interestingly, was released in few cities outside Karnataka as well, and is getting watched.

That’s thanks to positive reviews in the local media and word-of-mouth. It’s people who are powering the movie.

Given the love being showered on the film, the makers are now in the process of dubbing the film in other languages and releasing it soon.

After KGF, and 777 Charlie, Kantara is the latest film to do well at not only the Kannada box office, but beyond. The relatively low-cost film has collected nearly ₹25 crore at the box office, the bulk of it from Karnataka.

The box office collections of Kantara at the Indian box office are as follows:

  • Friday: ₹1.60 crores
  • Saturday: ₹3 crores
  • Sunday: ₹4.15 crores
  • Monday: ₹3.15 crores
  • Tuesday: ₹4 crores
  • Wednesday: ₹5.10 crores
  • Thursday: ₹3.90 crores
  • Total – ₹24.90 crores

Hombale Films, the production house that produced KGF, are the makers of Kantara too. They have, yet again, proved that content-backed films work.

Chiranjeevi’s Godfather collects ₹38 crore on Day 1

No surprises here. Megastar Chiranjeevi’s political-action mass entertainer Godfather is doing well at the box office.

With a star-studded cast, including Salman Khan, Nayanthara, Satyadev, Sunil, Shafi and others in key roles, Godfather’s drawing power was never in doubt. While this official remake of Malayalam blockbuster Lucifer has won director Mohan Raja appreciation for showing Chiranjeevi in a completely different way in this film.

Although not all critics are exactly thrilled with Godfather, Chiranjeevi fans are flocking to see it. Little wonder that it opened well at the box office, notching up a ₹38 crore worldwide gross on its first day.

That’s an enormous opening by any standards. But even more so if you consider the fact that it was had a limited release, and that too at regular ticket prices.

The film is doing exceptionally well in “mass areas”, but the numbers are good in A centers as well. As there are no films releasing next week, it is expected that Godfather will have a successfully run in theatres for another week or so.
