The list of IMDb Top 10 movies of 2022 in India was released on Wednesday, 14 December, and highlighted the unprecedented dominance of southern movies, pushing even the mighty Bollywood to the fringes.

South Indian films have been minting money at box offices across India for a few years now. But this time, they seem to have taken over the hearts of movie lovers across the nation.

The small-budget but content-driven Kannada film 777 Charlie found a place in the list with the highest rating, taking everyone by surprise.

This Rakshit Shetty-starrer achieved an 8.9 rating out of a possible 10, proving once again that a good story will always win the audience’s hearts.

Another content-backed movie, the Madhavan vehicle Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, directed by the actor himself, achieved a rating of 8.8.

This biopic is based on the life of controversial aerospace engineer Nambi Narayanan. It was in the news since its announcement.

The IMDb chose movies with a rating of 7 or higher with at least 25,000 votes to analyse and prepare the list of the top 10 most popular Indian movies of 2022.

It analysed the ratings of all the films released theatrically or digitally in India between 1 January and 7 November 7.

3 Telugu films

SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus RRR, which is winning accolades all over the globe, achieved a rating of 8.0.

Besides RRR, two other Telugu movies — Adivi Sesh’s Major and Hanu Raghavapudi-directorial Sita Ramam — found a place in the IMDb top 10 movies of 2022 list.

Adivi Sesh’s Major is based on the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan life. It was a blockbuster hit across languages and now made it to the IMDb list with an 8.2 rating.

Dulquer Salman and Mrunal Thakur’s romantic drama Sita Ramam earned an 8.6 rating, thus getting a clear thumbs up from movie aficionados.

Even Kannada and Tamil industries got three flicks each in the IMDb top 10 movies of 2022 list.

Movies of other languages

On the Kannada front, pan-Indian hit KGF Chapter 2 got an 8.4 rating, while Kantara surprised everyone by winning critical acclaim.

The latest Kannada release turned out into a massive hit, crossing all language and geographical barriers. The IMDb visitors gave Rishab Shetty’s Kantara an 8.6 rating.

In Tamil, Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyan Selvan I garnered a rating of 7.9. Pan-Indian flick Vikram, headlined by veteran star Kamal Hassan, got an impressive 8.4 rating on IMDb.

Meanwhile, the sorry saga of Bollywood continued with just one movie being part of the IMDb top 10 popular Indian movies of 2022 list.

Of all the movies released theatrically or digitally in India between January 1 and November 7, 2022, and have an average IMDb user rating of 7 or higher with at least 25,000 votes, these 10 titles were consistently the most popular with IMDb users.

The Kashmir Files, the highly controversial film directed by Vivek Agnihotri, is the only Hindi movie that attained a rating of 8.3 on IMDb.

IMDb receives about 200 million visitors monthly and the list of top movies of 2022 has been compiled based on the ratings given by its visitors.
