Telugu and Tamil film lovers recognise playback singer Chinmayi Sripada for her work in the industry. Besides her singing talent, she is known for her outspokenness on issues like the MeToo movement.

Chinmayi Sriprada has once again stirred controversy with her recent comments against senior artiste Annapurnamma.

In a recent interview, the senior character artiste stirred up a hornet’s nest by speaking against contemporary societal norms, particularly concerning young women.

She questioned the necessity of women venturing out in the dark, especially after midnight. She also criticised the trend of revealing attire that women often wear.

Annapurnamma questioned the need to wear short and revealing clothes.

She pointed out that office-going professionals, too, wear such attire and took exception to this trend.

She said women should face dire consequences if they take freedom for granted.

As Annapurnamma’s comments against women went viral on social media, singer Chinmayi Sriprada reacted sharply.

Annapurnamma’s comments are depressing: Chinmayi

Initially, Sripada shared Annapurnamma’s video addressing the subject of modernity, freedom, and revealing clothing.

Later, the playback singer took to her Instagram account to express her disappointment.

While expressing her admiration for Annapurnamma as an actor, Chinmayi said it was depressing when such comments come from actors whom she admires.

While speaking on women venturing out at night, Chinmayi wondered if it would be better to avoid giving birth to babies at night and suggested that women nurses and doctors should not work at night.

The singer said she was reacting to the comments because she also walked around wearing modern attire, left her hair loose, and styled it.

She further questioned how fair it was for men to rape innocent women who venture out at 3 am in villages to attend nature calls.

In such a society, particularly with individuals giving sermons on tradition and culture, Chinmayi said she felt at a loss being born in this country.
