rosy title controversy

Controversies related to title registration have become a new normal in the Kannada film industry, of late. The latest is actor Yogesh aka Loosemada’s 50th film, Rosy.

A similar title with a slight change — Rosy 45 — has already been registered with the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC). Rosy 45 marks the directorial debut of music composer Arjun Janya. It features Dr Shiva Rajkumar, Upendra and Raj B Shetty in lead roles.

First was Rosy 45

After learning that Yogesh’s 50th film has been titled Rosy, producer Ramesh Reddy of Suraj Production issued a statement where he mentioned that they were the first to register the title with the KFCC and they own it.

“We applied for the title Rosy 45 and the same was considered and passed by the KFCC by its title registration committee on 6 April 2023. But now, we learnt that another production house launched a film titled Rosy,” Ramesh Reddy and music composer-director Arjun Janya wondered.

As per the KFCC rules and regulations, the title solely belongs to the production house which registered it in the first place, they clarified.

“Hence, we brought the issue to the KFCC’s notice. No other banner can make use of the title even with any slight changes such as the addition of numbers or so on,” they asserted.

‘Shivanna gave us the nod’

Responding to the issue, Yogesh said he approached Dr Shivaraj Kumar who is playing the protagonist in Arjun Janya’s directorial debut.

“We had no idea about Rosy 45. When we applied for the title, we were not informed about it. Even the receipt of our application bears the title Rosy and it was approved. So, we went ahead and announced the title,” director Shoonya explained.

Actor Yogesh said they approached Shivanna to avoid further confusion and hurdles.

“Hearing our concern, Shivanna assured to speak to his team and get it sorted out. He gave us the green signal to go ahead with our same title Rosy,” Yogesh added.

“I am a huge fan of Yogi. I always wanted to work with him and came up with a raw-gangster movie that perfectly suits his image. The central character of Rosy is Rosy (played by Yogi). If we have to change the title, it would adversely affect the whole film and the character,” Shoonya elucidated.

Shooting from May

Rosy is likely to go on the floors in the second week of May.

“I have to gain a bit of weight for the role. It is a straight gangster subject relevant to present-day scenarios. It deals with gangsters, their lifestyle, modus operandi, its effects, etc,” Yogi said.
