Set in India, ‘To Kill a Tiger’ nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film at 2024 Oscars

The docu-feature film directed by Toronto-based  Nisha Pahuja is based on the distressing incident of the Jharkhand gang rape case.

To Kill a Tiger oscars 2024

Indian documentary feature film To Kill A Tiger has been nominated for the 96th Academy Awards in the Best Documentary Feature Film category.

The official announcement was made on Tuesday, 23rd January.

Bobi Wine: The People’s President, The Eternal Memory, Four Daughters, and 20 Days in Mariupol are the other nominations in the category.

The docu-feature film is based on the distressing incident of the Jharkhand gang rape case. Toronto-based  Nisha Pahuja has directed the film.

The movie gives an account of the disturbing events surrounding the gang rape of a 13-year-old girl in Jharkhand.

The documentary tells about the gangrape and it briefs about the challenges faced by her parents in their battle for justice.

According to the official synopsis, “To Kill a Tiger charts the emotional journey of an ordinary man facing extraordinary circumstances. A father whose love for his daughter forces a social reckoning that will reverberate for years to come.’

The film follows Ranjit’s uphill battle to find justice for his 13-year-old daughter who was abducted and later sexually assaulted by three men.

“Ranjit goes to the police, and the men are arrested. But Ranjit’s relief is short-lived, as the villagers and their leaders launch a sustained campaign to force the family to drop the charges. A cinematic documentary, To Kill a Tiger follows Ranjit’s uphill battle to find justice for his child,” according to the official website of To Kill a Tiger.

The documentary was appreciated for its bold approach to addressing the issue. The awareness regarding these incidents is also highlighted in the documentary.

It had its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival 2022 where it won the Amplify Voices Award for Best Canadian Feature Film.

The film is produced by Cornelia Principe and David Oppenheim.

The 96th annual Academy Awards will be held on 10 March at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel is returning to host the ceremony for the second consecutive year. This will be his fourth stint at the dais.
