Santosh Sivan bags Pierre Angenieux ExcelLens Award at Cannes

Veteran cinematographer Santosh Sivan has become the first Indian to win the Pierre Angenieux ExcelLens Award at the Cannes Film Festival, for his overall contribution to the cinematography.

According to an official communication from the award committee, the award would be presented at the 77th edition of the Cannes Festival to be held on 24 May.

The Pierre Angenieux Award in cinematography is an annual award that pays tribute to an eminent international director of photography at the Cannes Film Festival.

The younger generation will also have an opportunity to attend a master class to be organised at the festival for the master filmmaker to share his experience.

Santosh Sivan is an internationally acclaimed filmmaker and has worked in films such as Roja (1992), Kalapani (1996), Iruvar (1997), and Dil Se (1998).

He also directed Ananthabhadram (2005) and Urumi (2011), both in Malayalam.

Some of his popular works include Asoka (2001) and Before The Rains (2005).

The Cannes Film Festival started giving away the Pierre Angénieux Tribute to cinematographers in 2013.

In the past, the award was given to legendary film personalities like Philippe Rousselot, Vilmos Zsigmond, Roger Deakins, Peter Suschitzky, Christopher Doyle, Edward Lachman, Bruno Delbonnel, Agnes Godard, Darius Khondji, and Barry Ackroyd.
