Samantha-starrer ‘Shaakuntalam’ to hit theatres on 17 February

Based on Kalidasa's acclaimed Sanskrit play 'Abhijnana Shakuntalam., the film is written and directed by award-winning director Gunasekhar.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s forthcoming flick Shaakuntalam, directed by Gunasekhar, will hit the big screens worldwide on 17 February.

The actor announced the release of the movie on her social media on Monday, 2 January.

The mythological drama is supposed to be released on 4 November 2022. However, it has been put off owing to a delay in the post-production works, especially the 3D format works.

Directed by National Award recipient Gunasekhar, Shaakuntalam is based on renowned classical Sanskrit poet-playwright Kalidasa’s play “Abhijnana Shakuntalam”, written in the 4th Century CE.

The play narrates the epic love story between the protagonist Shakuntala — daughter of sage Viswamitra and apsara Menaka — and Dushyant, King of Hastinapura.

While Samantha will play Shakuntala, Sufiyum Sujayatum-fame Dev Mohan will essay the role of Dushyant in this movie.

Neelima Guna is producing Shaakuntalam under the banner of Gunaa Teamworks. Dil Raju is presenting it through his Sri Venkateswara Creations banner.

Mani Sharma is scoring the music and Sekhar V Joseph is handling the camera. Prawin Pudi is the editor.

The mythological drama also casts Sachin Khedekar, Kabir Bedi, Mohan Babu, Prakash Raj, Madhubala, Gautami, Aditi Balan, Ananya Nagalla, and Jisshu Sengupta in key roles.

It will be released simultaneously in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi languages.

Gunasekhar is known for his works like Laati (1992), Ramayanam (1997), Choodalani Undi (1998), Okkadu (2003), and Rudramadevi (2015).

Meanwhile, Samantha recently delivered a hit with Yashoda and is currently working on Shiva Nirvana’s Kushi, a romantic comedy alongside Vijay Deverakonda.
