Saavithri to premiere on YouTube

In a first for Sandalwood, Saavithri, a full-length Kannada feature film, is set to release directly on YouTube on Friday, 7 July. It stars Vijay Raghavendra, Prakash Belawadi, and National Award-winning actress Thara in lead roles.

The psychological horror thriller will stream on SRS Media Vision, a premier YouTube channel dedicated to streaming classic Kannada movies, from 5.12 PM on Friday. The channel has over 3.55 million subscribers to date (6 July).

Saavithri director S Dinesh told South First that the commercial venture went on the floors in 2020. It was like any other project made initially for theatrical release and then for other platforms like television and OTT.

Saavithri is a psychological thriller that revolves around how children’s mindset is influenced by the environment they are brought up in, especially with adults fighting with each other in their presence. It is also blended with horror elements. We have tried a unique subject which appeals to society with a message,” the director said.

Asked why such a mainstream film made as a commercial venture is being released on YouTube and not in theatres or OTT platforms, producer Prashanth Kumar Heelalige stated that he did everything in his capacity to get his maiden venture a decent release in theatres or on OTT.

“But I have my own reasons for selling the digital rights of Saavithri. It’s my first film as a producer and I did my best to bankroll good content and to make a quality film for the Kannada audience. I’m sure they will like it,” the producer explained.

Prashanth Kumar Heelalige further added: “Saavithri was even selected for the Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFES) where it evoked a good response from the audience. Almost all the shows at the film festival were houseful.”

The producer revealed that the Censor Board cleared Saavithri‘s release a long time ago, but things changed as he fell ill.

“I was not keeping well for almost a year now. Following that, I did my best to reach out to everyone for the business. Without an iota of ego, I did everything to get Saavithri released,” Heelalige said.

After more than two years of relentless efforts, the producer finally had to settle for the best price he was offered. “I had no other option. I still own the satellite rights.”

However, he announced that his next would be a theatrical release and is hopeful to make a mark for himself in the industry.

Meanwhile, director Dinesh stated that he was not aware of the direct YouTube release of Saavithri.

“Until yesterday, I was not aware that the film was being released directly on YouTube. I even spoke to the producer and tried convincing him that we could wait for some more time for a better option,” he said.

“I feel sad that a film that earned a good response at the film festival is being released on YouTube. However, it’s undeniably true that Prashanth Kumar Heelalige did his best as a filmmaker,” Dinesh added.
