Roshan Mathew and Darshana Rajendran’s ‘Paradise’ to release on 28 June

The film, presented by Madras Talkies, won the prestigious Kim Jiseok Award at the Busan International Film Festival 2023.

Sri Lankan filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage’s Paradise is scheduled for release across India on 28 June. The movie stars Malayalam actors Roshan Mathew and Darshana Rajendran of Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey (2022)fame, in the lead roles. It premiered at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) last year, where it received the prestigious Kim Jiseok Award for Best Film.

The film’s story centres on an Indian couple, played by Roshan Mathew and Darshana Rajendran, who travel to Sri Lanka to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary. The narrative explores the strains in their relationship that emerge due to certain events unfolding in the country.

The makers stated that Paradise depicts Sri Lanka’s condition during the 2022 financial crisis.

The film covers the shortages of food, medication, and fuel, which led to blackouts and public protests. Paradise is presented by Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies.

Director Vithanage stated that Paradise is his first Indian film and marks the first worldwide release for a Sri Lankan director. He also expressed gratitude to Newton Cinema for broadening his horizons.

‘I fell in love with the Paradise script’

Anto Chittilappilly, CEO of Newton Cinema, shared that he fell in love with the script upon his initial reading.

He stated that it was a great honour to produce a film by master director Prasanna Vithanage. He shared his joy in working with the talented cast and crew, whose efforts contributed to the film’s success.

Anto Chittilappilly said that the entire team is deeply humbled by the accolades the movie has received, including the Busan award and four nominations at the Asian Film Awards.

He emphasised that Paradise is a film best experienced in theaters to fully appreciate its exceptional audio-visual elements.

Paradise also features actors Shyam Fernando and Mahendra Perera, with dialogues in English, Malayalam, Tamil, Sinhala, and Hindi.

The film’s crew includes Rajeev Ravi as the cinematographer, Sreekar Prasad as the editor, Tapas Nayak as the sound designer, and K as the music director.
