CinemaSnippets: ‘Romancham’ enters ₹50-Crore club in 23 days

Directed by debutant Jithu Madhavan, ‘Romancham’ initially didn’t draw crowds to the theatres due to a lack of star cast.

Word-of-mouth publicity seems to have helped Romancham, the recently-released horror-comedy helmed by debutant Jithu Madhavan, attain superhit status. According to the trade, the film reached the ₹50-crore club 23 days after its release.

Upon its release, Romancham couldn’t attract much crowd to the theatres due to the lack of a star cast. The only known person in the movie is Soubin Shahir. The rest of the actors are newcomers.

A day before its release, John Paul, one of the producers, wrote an emotional post on social media mentioning the hardships faced to produce the film. He said he wasn’t sure if he will produce it.

Romancham didn’t even get distributors as it missed the earlier release dates. However, it is now a blockbuster and is the first superhit Malayalam movie this year.

The movie collected over ₹3 crores at the Kerala box office in the past weekend. As per trade analysts, its total collection from overseas and the rest of India amounted to ₹20 crores.

Romancham was made with a budget of about ₹2 crores. After getting positive reports, more theatres started screening it.

It has Arjun Ashokan in an important role. The music by Sushin Syam has been trending since its release.

First look of ‘Kannur Squad’ launched

The title and first look of Mammootty’s Kannur Squad, the fourth venture of the actor’s production house (Mammootty Kampany) were launched in Kerala on 26 February.

The investigative thriller directed by debutant Roby Varghese Raj is scripted by Muhammad Shafi and actor Rony David Raj.

Kannur Squad has been extensively shot in Kannur, Kasargod, Wayanad, Ernakulam, Trivandrum, Paala, Pune, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh, Mangalore, Belgaw, and Coimbatore.

Muhammed Rahil is the cinematographer. Sushin Shyam is the music director. Praveen Prabhakar is the editor. Dulquer Salman’s Wayfarer Films will distribute the movie across Kerala.

Mammoooty’s recent lineup of movies has made his fans and movie buffs curious. His recent movie Christopher had a good making style. Rorschach was appreciated for its theme and treatment.

Nanpakal Nerath Mayakkam had a fine performance from the thespian who has been in the industry for about 40 years. Meanwhile, Kathal produced by Mammootty Kampany will be released soon.

Priyadarshan’s next is a thriller

Director Priyadarshan’s next movie Corona Papers is a thriller based on a serious topic. The makers launched the first-look poster of the flick on 26 February.

Gayathrie Shankar, who did a strong role in Nna Thaan Case Kodu, is the leading lady in the film. Shane Nigam, Shine Tom Chacko, Maniyanpilla Raju, and Siddique are the other actors.

The shooting of Corona Papers began in October 2022. The film is in the post-production stage. It is produced by Priyadarshan under his Four Frames Sound banner and released via Four Frames Release.

Divakar S is the cinematographer. MS Aiyyappan Nair is the editor. Manu Jagadh, who did Bhoothakaalam and Minnal Murali, is the art director.

The stunts are choreographed by Rajasekhar and the costumes are designed by Sameera Saneesh. Corona Papers is expected to release in April.
