Rana Daggubati to play the lead in Sekhar Kammula's Leader 2

Director Sekhar Kammula’s films are known for their distinctive storytelling. Although some themes may seem familiar, his movies consistently offer a fresh, engaging screenplay.

The filmmaker is often lauded for his authentic depiction of an ordinary lifestyle.

Over the years, there have been occasional rumours about sequels to his hit films such as Happy Days (2007) and Leader (2010), headlined by Rana Daggubati. However, these speculations typically lost momentum quickly.

Recently, Shekhar Kammula commented on these sequel rumours. He disclosed that while making Happy Days, it had been a decade since he completed his studies and hence wondered if the story would work at the box office.

The director also doubted if the story would strike a chord with audiences. He had concerns that the film would seem outdated.

However, the themes of friendship, academics, college life, and family emotions showcased in Happy Days still resonate with viewers today.

Sekhar Kammula also observed that while the essence of the story remains relevant, the introduction of cell phones and gadgets changed the way students perceive their world, feeling as if they are constantly under someone else’s influence.

When questioned about Happy Days 2, Shekhar Kammula mentioned that after watching the buzz of the re-release of the original film, he did consider making a sequel.

However, he emphasised that the decision would depend on whether the storyline felt right at this age and the taste of the audience.

On the other hand, he confirmed that he will make Leader 2, focusing on the future of politics.

Sekhar Kammula also revealed that Rana will play the protagonist in Leader 2, too.

Sekhar Kammula and Rana Daggubati have already conceptualised a storyline for the sequel that needs to be developed into a complete script.
