Interview: I am glad that I took part in the OTT space, says Priya Mani

Her 56th film, in her long-drawn acting career, is coincidentally titled ‘Dr 56’ and is up for release on 9 December.

One of the top actresses from the South film Industry with many critically acclaimed performances to her credit, including the coveted National Award, Priya Mani is busy these days with multiple projects on multiple platforms in multiple languages.

Her 56th venture, made in Kannada, is coincidentally titled Dr 56. It is simultaneously releasing in Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu this Friday, 9 December.

In an exclusive interview with South First, she speaks about her role as a CBI officer in the sci-fi murder mystery, working for digital platforms, and much more:

‘Dr 56 is a warning bell’

Dr 56 is an honest effort in showcasing the medical mafia which is very much relevant in the present-day context. Based on true incidents where such cases have been reported, the film focuses on creating awareness among the viewers on such incidents, through an appealing cinematic experience,” Priya Mani says.

The film only represents such mafias, which may account for less than one per cent of overall medical institutions. Further, she clarifies that it is a warning bell to all to be careful of such illegal activities.

The actor plays the role of Priya, a CBI officer who is assigned to probe a case that unfolds into a sci-fi thriller revolving around a murder mystery.

About OTT platforms

Following the huge success of the web series Family Man, Priya Mani reveals that she is glad that she took part in the OTT space.

“Even when the digital platforms were in the entry stage, I had always believed that it would be the next big thing in the Indian entertainment sector, considering the progress in Internet connectivity in India and various other factors.”

The actor says that the audience has been extremely sweet in their response to her performances and collaboration for the OTT projects.

She believes that OTT platforms created their niche alongside the traditional platform – theatres – by providing great opportunities to technicians, and artists.

“These days we can see that a section of the film industry is making movies for direct OTT release. Apart from good opportunities for the talented, the quality of entertainment, be it web series, movies or other forms, they have drastically improved. More importantly, the audience is appreciating such works,” Priya Mani observes.

A slew of films in her kitty

In terms of her ongoing projects, the actor will be seen in a prominent role alongside Ajay Devgn in Maidaan, a biographical sports drama film directed by Amit Sharma and produced by Boney Kapoor.

Academy Award winner AR Rahman is scoring the music for the project.

Next is another pan-India project that revolves around the story of an NRI family who visits India on a pilgrimage to Ashtadasa Shakti Peethas.

Priya Mani is also playing a vital role in Naga Chaitanya’s next, a bilingual, with Venkat Prabhu.

Tentatively titled 302, the movie is referred to as NC 22. It will feature Chaitanya in the role of a police officer. Priyamani could be playing the role of a Chief Minister in this action-thriller, say sources.

In another interesting line of films, the actor will be the lead in Quotation Gang, a multilingual dark action thriller directed by Vivek K. She is pairing up with Jackie Shroff, Sunny Leone, and Sara Arjun in the movie.

In Kannada, she has Kaimara, a horror psychological thriller directed by Gautham Vimal, the nephew of renowned film director P Vasu. She will be playing one of the three prominent characters alongside Priyanka Upendra and Chaya Singh in Gautham’s directorial debut venture.

Finally, Priya Mani will be seen in the actress-turned-director Revathi’s comeback directorial venture Salaam Venky (Hindi). It is based on a true story and features Kajol in the lead. The film is releasing on 9 December.
