Tamil film producer VA Durai, best known for having bankrolled director Bala’s cult classic Pithamagan featuring Vikram and Suriya, has appealed for financial assistance to undergo diabetes treatment.

On Monday, 6 March, people close to the producer put out a video clip of Durai along with an appeal for help. The producer, in a state of penury now, developed serious sores in his leg due to acute diabetes.

Durai, who was first treated at the Sri Ramachandra Hospital, was later shifted to Vijaya Hospital in Vadapalani, Chennai. However, he has been brought back home since he can’t afford treatment.

Durai’s firm, Evergreen Movies International, produced several Tamil films such as Gajendra, Ennama Kannu, Looty, and Lovely. He was also the executive producer of Rajinikanth’s Baba.

In the video clip, Durai said: “I have been facing quite a bit of problem because of my legs. I cannot walk. I don’t have any other health issues. My financial status is depleted and my livelihood is difficult. I appeal to one and all to help me.”

Actor-producer Karunas, also an ex-MLA, reportedly offered to send in ₹50,000 to the producer.

Sources close to the producer say that Karunas called up one of the caretakers of Durai soon after learning about the producer’s health condition.

The former MLA is believed to have expressed his concern at Durai’s health condition and recalled that the producer paid him ₹50,000 for acting in Pithamagan. Karunas reportedly offered to return that amount to the producer for his treatment.
