Even before he made his debut as an actor, Vikky Varun started his career in films as an assistant director. He assisted renowned filmmakers including Duniya Suri and Yogaraj Bhat.
After back-to-back success as an actor with Kendasampige and College Kumara, he is now turning into a full-fledged director with his third venture — Kala Patthar.
Before the pandemic, a film titled Kala Patthar was launched. Thanks to lockdowns and other issues, it was shelved.
“However, I wanted my third film to be titled Kala Pathhar. Once everything returned to normal, the project came back to life but with a different director and producer,” Vikky Varun told South First.
However, the actor clarified that his movie has no connection with Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan’s film with the same title or the Kala Patthar Mountain in Nepal.
“I have the rights to a story penned by director D Satya Prakash of Rama Rama Re fame. Since I made up my mind on Kala Patthar, I worked on the script along with Satya Prakash. It was a task to both direct and act in it but I enjoyed it eventually,” he informed.
The movie will hit the screens in April or May. Currently, the crew is busy with dubbing work.
Though Kala Patthar has commercial elements, it talks about a sensitive issue related to human behaviour and how one tends to neglect an important aspect of our lives.
Produced by Suresh and Nagaraju of Bhuvan Movies, the movie has been shot in various parts of Karnataka; more predominantly at Jainapur village in the Bijapur district.
The actor-director revealed that the place he shot a major portion of the film is known for its unique characteristics.
“The Jainapur village gets completely submerged during the rainy season and later surfaces in summer. The State government made alternative arrangements for the villagers during the rainy season at a nearby village,” he explained.
Also, the place has great historical significance. One of the villagers, Kashibai Mallappa Desai became the first Indian to purchase a luxurious Rolls Royce during the British regime.
When the district collector asked her to give the car for an official purpose, Kashibai refused to do so saying she would rather use it to dry cow dung cakes. Furious with her reply, the district collector immediately cancelled the vehicle registration.
And guess what? Kashibai stood by her words and used the Rolls Royce to dry cow dung cakes, Vikky recalled the past incident.
