Actor Yash and production company Hombale Films from the KGF franchise are teaming up with director Shankar to make a web series based on King Vel Pari.

Based on a book written by Su Venkatesan (Sahitya Akademi award winner) and serialised for 100 weeks in Ananda Vikatan Tamil weekly, the web series will be televised by Netflix and jointly produced with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.

Sources said that director Shankar took an advance for the project long back from Hombale Films. He also initiated talks with the publishing house and producers who expressed their willingness to make the novel into a film.

The makers approached Netflix since its web series is one of the most popular in OTT circles. The budget has reportedly been fixed at around ₹1,000 crore.

Yash’s KGF: Chapter 2 had notched up high viewership when released internationally. While he was been confirmed for the role of King Vel Pari, last week, actors from other Indian film industries would soon join the cast.

The fictional account depicts Vel Pari as a king who protected Parambu Nadu and stood against the Cholas, Cheras and Pandyas. Parambu Nadu extended from the Piranmalai hills located in the Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu to Nedungadi in the Palakkad district of Kerala.

The universal factor that would strike a chord with an international audience is that the subject shows the king — a lover of animals and plants — as a man generous to the needy who was brought down by treachery.

Eric Alagan’s book on Vel Pari

Eric Alagan wrote a book titled Vel Pari-The Tamilakkam War, which looks at some unanswered questions about the life of the king.

Were the legends surrounding Pari true? Are there rational explanations for his outlandish deeds? Did he gift his chariot to a jasmine vine? Why didn’t he remarry when he didn’t have an heir?

Did Pari succumb to the treachery of the Cholan, Cheran and Pandyan kings? The three kings were renowned for their code of chivalry and dharma. How did Pari die? Was he murdered by his own courtiers, who then blamed the three kings?

Historians found little common ground. But they agree that Pari and the influential poet Kapilar were best friends. What was the genesis of Kapilar’s ground-breaking work — the song of the Kurinji? Why did Kapilar commit suicide?

This is the story of Pari as told by Kapilar and Kachagan — the raj guru of the Cholan empire — who did not lend his name to written history. Written in the first person, Kapilar and Kachagan relate the events they witnessed and lived.

Now, who narrates the truer version of history is for you to decide.  This is the question posed by the author. This interesting Tamil historical flick will be next to pique the interests of the viewers after Mani Ratnam’s upcoming Ponniyin Selvan.
