Name of Mammootty's character in Bramayugam changed

A day ahead of its release, the makers of Bramayugam have changed the name of Mammootty’s character in the film from “Kunjamon Potty” to “Kodumon Potty”.

The sudden change in the character’s name comes after a plea was filed by a family member of Kunjamon Ilam, a traditional Brahmin family in Kerala.

Bramayugam director Rahul Sadasivan and producers Chakravarthy, Ramachandra, and S Sashikanth announced this on Wednesday, 14 February.

Plea against Bramayugam

In the plea, the petitioner averred that the portrayal of the main character (Mammootty) in Bramayugam (in a negative and defamatory way) might tarnish his family’s reputation.

The petitioner is the head of Punjamon Illam, a traditional Brahmin household in Kerala.

The petitioner’s family lineage is engaged in ritualistic practices documented in the book “Aithihymala“, written by Kottarathil Sankunni.

“If the name of the lead character and its traditional home is not changed, the same will cause serious prejudice to the petitioner, his family members, ancestors, and successors,” stated the plea, as reported by Live Law.

Justice Devan Ramachandran heard the case.

According to the petitioner, Bramayugam depicts the character of Kunjamon Potty as a person with negative connotations.

Hence, the petitioner sought to revoke the film’s certification.

It was argued that the lead character in the movie performs Black Magic and other socially unacceptable performances, which is a serious issue for their family’s reputation.

The petitioner also argued that the film’s story is based on their family’s story in the book.

Plea disposed

After the hearing, the High Court issued notices to the parties concerned based on the plea.

The counsel for the respondents submitted that they applied to the Central Board of Film Certification to change the name of the lead character to “Kodumon Potty”.

The High Court disposed of the plea after consulting the CBFC.

Bramayugam is directed by Rahul Sadasivan and produced by Night Shift Studios and Y Not Studios.

It also stars Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan, and Amalda Liz in key roles.
