Synopsis: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced that Malayalam actor Mohanlal will be presented with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023. The award will be formally presented on 23 September at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced on Saturday, 20 September, that Malayalam actor Mohanlal will be presented with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023.
In a career spanning over four decades, the thespian has acted in more than 400 films, including in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada. The ministry said that the Malayalam superstar is being honoured for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.
The award will be formally presented on 23 September at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony.
“On the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee, the Government of India is pleased to announce that Shri. Mohanlal will be conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023. Mohanlal’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! The legendary actor, director, and producer is being honoured for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema,” the Ministry said in a post on X.
“His unmatched talent, versatility, and relentless hard work have set a golden standard in Indian film history,” it added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, congratulating the actor, described him as a “leading light of Malayalam cinema” whose versatility and brilliance have enriched Indian cinema.
“His achievements across languages and mediums are truly inspiring. May his accomplishments continue to motivate generations to come,” the prime minister posted on X.
“Congratulations to Mohanlal on being honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. A truly deserving recognition for his extraordinary contributions to Indian cinema. This proud moment brings joy to every Malayali and to our nation as a whole,” said Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Born on 21 May 1960, Mohanlal is known for his natural charm and extraordinary ability to embody diverse characters. He has carved a place for himself as one of the most admired actors in the country.
From the critically acclaimed Vanaprastham to blockbuster entertainers like Pulimurugan, Drishyam, Lucifer and others, Mohanlal’s repertoire is as wide as it is impactful. His emotionally resonant performances in films such as Bharatham, Thanmathra, Kireedam and others further underline his versatility.
Over the years, he has been honoured with two National Film Awards for Best Actor, nine Kerala State Film Awards, and numerous international recognitions. He was honoured with Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2019.
Beyond films, his work in theatre and his ventures as a producer and director have cemented his stature as a multifaceted artist. With the Dadasaheb Phalke Award now added to his illustrious list of honours, Mohanlal joins the pantheon of Indian cinema’s greatest icons.
