The release of remastered versions of old films is a trend that gained momentum in recent years. The yesteryear Hindi films of Amitabh Bachchan and the Tamil films of Rajinikanth were re-released on their birthdays. Interestingly, the Hollywood movie Titanic is getting a re-release on 10 February.

The Malayalam movie Spadikam, which got cult status upon its release in 1995, is the latest addition to the list. It is being re-released on 9 February. The latest version is a digital print that has been mixed in Dolby Atmos sound and 4K projection.

Dolby Atmos is the new age sound technique with 3-dimensional effects while 4K projection gives amazing picture quality.

Directed by Bhadran, Spadikam starred Mohanlal, Thilakan, KPAC Lalitha, Urvashi, and Nedumudi Venu in key roles.

The film’s story revolves around an ego clash between father and son played by Thilakan and Mohanlal respectively. It also discusses the need for proper parenting.

The film is being presented in a new format by Geometrics Film House. The original version was produced by R Mohan under his Good Night Productions.

Mohanlal, Urvashi in their full form

According to Bhadran, he along with the Geometrics team made a huge effort to remaster the movie. They worked for about three years on the sound system and visual works so they could re-release the film.

“The re-release will provide an opportunity for the youngsters to watch the movie in a theatre. They might have watched it on TV or an OTT platform. Further, we added new shots to the remastered version,” he told the media during a press meet organised in December last year.

Spadikam’s re-release will lend an opportunity for the audience to see Mohanlal in his vintage appearance. They can also watch ace actress Urvashi in full form as the movie was among the ones which she did during the peak time of her career.

During the press meet, Bhadran also recalled that Mohanlal was interested to do the role of Aadu Thoma. “He was initially doubtful about how the audience will react as the movie has many cuss words. But I convinced him.”

Actor George, who debuted with Spadikam, came to be identified with the name of the film.

Later actors Thilakan, Rajan P Dev, and Karamana Janardhanan also featured in it.

J Williams and S Kumar handled the cinematography. SP Venkatesh composed the music.

Actor Indrans, who is now popular as a character artist, designed the costumes.

Actor Roopesh Peethambaran, who did the role of younger Mohanal, went on to direct Dulquer Salmaan in Theevram.

A peppy song from the movie, “Ezhimala Poonjola”, featuring late Silk Smitha and Mohanlal is still popular.

New teaser released

Meanwhile, a new teaser of the movie was unveiled by Mohanlal via his Facebook page on 14 January.

According to the producers, the film is expected to be re-released in 150 theatres. Only 89 theatres in Kerala are equipped with the Dolby Atmos and the rest have Dolby 7.1 sound system.

Recently, Bhadran announced a new untitled movie. He did Udayon with Mohanlal in 2009.
