Media house Manorama Online organised “MT Kalam Navathi Vandanam” to observe the 90th birthday of Malayalam director-screenwriter MT Vasudevan Nair in Kochi on Friday, 22 December.

MT Vasudevan Nair turned 90 on 15 July 2023. The writer has been honoured with the Kendra Sahitya Academy Awards and Kerala Sahitya Academy Awards for his prolific writing.

Malayalam superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty participated in the event.

Recalling his association with MT Vasudevan Nair, Mohanlal said he acted in around 12 movies scripted by Vasudevan Nair and directed by IV Sasi.

The veteran actor acted under MT’s direction in Amrutham Gamaya (1987), which was originally directed by Hariharan. When Hariharan was not present on the sets, MT directed three to four scenes of the movie, Mohanlal recalled.

The actor is also a part of Olavum Theeravum, a yet-to-be-released film directed by Priyadarshan.

The Neru actor also spoke about his preparations for MT Vasudevan Nair’s films.

According to him, it was possible to change the dialogue in any movie but not in MT’s as dialogue played a crucial role in all his works.

Mohanlal also recalled an instance when MT watched his drama Karnabharam in Mumbai. MT Vasudevan Nair didn’t say anything about his performance and left after the drama.

When the actor met him in Dubai later and asked about his performance in Karnabharam, much to the delight of Mohanlal, MT said he liked it very much.

We share a personal bond: Mammootty

Mammootty acted in many films scripted by MT Vasudevan Nair, Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989) being the most popular one.

Addressing the session, the actor shared that he liked the dialogues written by MT in his novels which he used to read much before his debut in movies. Learning MT’s dialogues was a tough task but it would become simpler after a while, he pointed out.

Recalling his experience while acting in Oru Vadakkam Veeragatha, Mammootty said he was not a part of the movie during the initial discussions as he wasn’t sure if he could fit in a character in a film based on ballads.

However, MT’s script changed the perception of the actor. His scripts were written in the Valluvanad dialect and had clarity about his dialogues.

Mammootty also revealed that Vilkkanundu Swapnangal (1980) was not his first film with MT Vasudevan Nair. MT recommended the actor in the movie titled Devalokam (1979), which was not completed. Later, Mammootty was taken aboard for Vilkanund Swapnangal.
