YouTuber Aju Alex, popular by the name “Chekuthan”, has been arrested by the police for allegedly making a derogatory video against veteran actor Mohanlal.
Siddique, the General Secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), filed a complaint after the YouTuber uploaded a defamatory video insulting Mohanlal.
In the video, Aju Alex, a resident of Thiruvalla, criticised Mohanlal over his recent visit to the landslide-hit Wayanad on 3 August.
Mohanlal holds the honourary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army. During his visit to Wayanad, the actor wore the Army uniform.
In his video, the YouTuber reportedly accused the actor of exploiting the honourary title for his personal gain. He mocked Mohanlal saying, the actor wears the Army uniform even during his visits to hospitals, implying that his actions were merely for publicity.
The police registered a case against YouTuber Aju Alex under Sections 192 and 296(b) of IPC, along with the Kerala Police Act 120 (for defamation and incitement of public disorder) and arrested him.
Siddique told the media that there had been several incidents of YouTubers abusing actors in recent times which was why he initiated a legal action against Aju Alex.
He said Chekuthan insulted Mohanlal personally. The actor visited Wayanad because he was a part of the Territorial Army and it was a noble act and not done for publicity.
However, YouTuber Aju Alex told the media that he did not insult Mohanlal and he was falsely impacted in the case.
Meanwhile, a police official told Manorama News Channel that Mohanlal called him saying he didn’t have any issue if anyone commented or shared their opinion about him. Nevertheless, insulting the Army wasn’t a good practice and that’s why a complaint needed to be filed.
During his visit to the landslide-hit Wayanad, Mohanlal announced ₹3 crore aid on behalf of his NGO Vishwasanti Foundation towards the relief operations in the region.
