The Drishyam franchise, starring Mohanlal has put Malayalam cinema on a global stage.
Directed by Jeethu Joseph, the first part Drishyam 1, released in 2013 revolved around Georgekutty (Mohanlal) and his family, who come under suspicion when Varun Prabhakar, the son of the IG Geetha Prabhakar, goes missing.
The second part was made after almost a decade, in 2021, which was also a huge hit. The franchise was remade in various Indian languages, including Hindi and Telugu.
With the franchise’s success, the next part— Drishyam 3 has become the most anticipated project. Amid the many speculations, the lead actor, Mohanlal, speaking with Galatta Plus in an interview, confirmed that the film is on the cards.
While the actor didn’t give a definitive date, or at what stage the project is, the 30-odd seconds clip, where he is seen speaking about the franchise is now viral on social media.
“The thing that made people interested in that film was the fact that it was about a man standing up for his family. COVID came six years later when we were planning Drishyam 2. But it was good for the Malayalam industry.”
“Because people from all over the world saw the film. Recently, when we were shooting in Gujarat, many people from there recognized me because of Drishyam. After Drishyam 2, audiences in other languages started watching more Malayalam films. It was a film that brought a pan-Indian reach to Malayalam. We are now trying to come out with Drishyam 3,” said Mohanlal.
