The organisers of the 16th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) have cancelled all the official events on Wednesday, 31 July, as a mark of respect for people who lost their lives in the deadly landslide in Kerala’s Wayanad.
All the official events scheduled for 31 July at the 16th IDSFFK, including seminars, Meet the Director sessions, Face-to-Face, and the In Conversation programmes were cancelled.
The awards will be presented to the winners without a closing ceremony. However. the film screenings will take place as planned.
Given the tragic deaths, the Kerala government declared a two-day state mourning.
The IDSFFK is organised every year by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy for the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala. It is held to promote a vibrant documentary and short film movement.
The 16th edition of the IDSFFK commenced in the state capital of Thiruvananthapuram on 26 July. It was scheduled to conclude on 31 July with a closing ceremony, followed by the screening of award-winning films.
Filmmaker Rakesh Sharma (chairperson), film editor Jabeen Merchant, and filmmaker Pankaj Rishi Kumar are the jury members in the non-fiction category. The jury of the fiction category included screenwriter-documentary filmmaker Urmi Juvekar (chairperson), along with filmmakers Pushpendra Singh and Krishand RK.
The IDSFFK has different categories, including long and short documentary competitions, Malayalam Non-Competition Long Documentary, Music Video, International Non-Fiction, and Animation.

Nirmal Chander Dandriyal’s 6-A Akash Ganga is competing for the award in the Long Documentary section on 31 July.
The other films that will be screened include six short documentaries competing for the awards and four films that won international awards (in the festival winners package).
Three films in the social justice category, one in the Tales from Palestine section, one made by the Bedi brothers, eight international documentaries, and short films will be screened on the final day of the IDSFFK.
