Veteran Malayalam actor TP Madhavan no more

A prominent personality of the Malayalam cinema, especially in the 1980s and 1990s, TP Madhavan acted in over 600 films.

Veteran Malayalam actor TP Madhavan passed away on Wednesday, 9 October, at 88 at a private hospital in Kollam, where he had been undergoing treatment.

A day before his death, Madhavan, who had been suffering from dementia had undergone gastrointestinal surgery and was on the ventilator.

A prominent personality of the Malayalam cinema, especially in the 1980s and 1990s, TP Madhavan acted in over 600 films.

Madhavan also served as the first general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) and implemented several initiatives for the welfare of fellow artists during his decade-long tenure.

Known for his versatile acting, Madhavan started his career in Mayalayam cinema at the age of 40 after meeting actor Madhu, with villain roles.

His first film was Ragam, which was released in 1975. His other notable works were Vietnam Colony (1992), Nadodikattu (1987), and Kalyanaraman (2002).

However, he soon made his place in the movie industry and essayed many character and comedy roles.

Son of famous academician Prof NP Pillai, Madhavan was a postgraduate in sociology, who ran successful marketing agencies in Mumbai and Kolkata before entering the world of cinema.

Madhavan’s life took a drastic turn in 2015 when he suffered a stroke while on a pilgrimage to Haridwar. After this, he was shifted to Gandhi Bhavan, a charitable home in Pathanapuram. He stayed there for eight years.

While he tried his hand at TV serials after the incident, he could not continue owing to his health.

Madhavan is survived by his two children, Devika and Raja Krishna Menon.

Raja Krishna Menon went on to work in Bollywood, best known for directing Akshay Kumar’s Airlift (2016).
