Veteran Malayalam director Mohan died at a private hospital in Kochi on Tuesday, 27 August. He was 76.
Mohan, who had been in Malayalam cinema since 1970, was undergoing treatment for health issues for some time.
The Campus, released in 2005, was his last film. Monhan debuted in the industry with Randu Penkuttikal (1978), one of the earliest films in Malayalam that explored the themes of lesbianism in a nuanced manner.
The filmmaker was also regarded as a frontrunner in the new wave of Malayalam cinema. He helmed around 22 films in his vast career in the industry.
Director Mohan was known for his intense films, which also explored themes of romance. His oeuvre portrayed family values and is quite popular for memorable songs.
Late actor Nedumudi Venu was one of the regular actors in his films.
Mohan also directed critically acclaimed films like Alolam (1982) and Shalini Ente Koottukari (1978). While Aalolam explored the painful silence between a husband and woman, Shalini Ente Koottukari dealt with the loneliness and pain of a young girl who faces social isolation.
Mohan was one of the directors who had been credited for portraying strong female characters in his work. Isabella (1988) is an important movie in her career and is appreciated for its visual appeal.
Director Mohan also worked with filmmakers like John Paul and Padmarajan. Indeed, he started his career as an associate director.
Some of the popular films directed by Mohan include Vadaka Veedu (1979), Idavela (1982), Mukham (1990), Sakshyam (1995), and Pakshe (1994)
Director Mohan hailed from Irinjalakuda in Thrissur district. He is survived by his wife Anupama Mohan. two sons—Purandar and Upendar.
Anupama is a famous Kuchipudi dancer and the heroine of his directorial debut Randu Penkuttikal.
Soon after the news broke about Mohan’s demise, the Malayalam film fraternity expressed its deep condolences to the bereaved family. Details about his final rites are yet to be announced.
