The movie is directed by debutant Jothish Shankar, and was released in theatres on 30 January.
Jothish is a known production designer who entered the Malayalam industry with 2011’s Adaminte Makan Abu. Some of his notable works include Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (2017), Kumbalangi Nights (2019) and Virus (2019).
Ponman is an adaptation of GR Indugopan’s novel “Nalanchu Cheruppakar”. Indugopalan and Minnal Murali co-writer Justin Mathew scripted the film.
The movie also starred Aavesham-fame Sajin Gopu, Deepak Parambol, Anand Manmadhan, Rajesh Sharma, Jaya Kurup, Vyshnavi Kalyani, Lakshmy Sanju, Reju Sivadas, Maju Anchal, Shylaja P Ambu, KV Kadampanadan, Thankam Mohan and Midhun Venugopal.
The movie featured strong performances from its lead actors. Basil Joseph as Ajesh delivered an impressive performance, with the role feeling very personal to him. His portrayal captured the depth of the character and conveys the right amount of emotion, making it arguably his best performance yet.
“Ponman shines in its presentation and storytelling. The power-packed performances by Basil Joseph, Lijo Jose and Sajin Gopu are the major highlights of the movie,” our review read.
Basil’s upcoming films include Marana Mass produced by actor Tovino Thomas.
