Award-winning director Payal Kapadia and actor Kani Kusruti are set to collaborate once again after All We Imagine As Light.
However, this time, they are not collaborating as actor-directors, but as co-producers, alongside, Malayalam director Jeo Baby, and actors Ali Fazal and Richa Chadda, for a Malayalam film titled Guptam (The Last of Them Plagues).
The film is written and directed by Kunjila Mascilamani. Sharing the news on her Instagram account, wrote, “‘Guptam’ (The Last of Them Plagues) will be at CinéV Film Markets, Chandigarh, from 20th to 23rd March. Writer & Director – Kunjila Mascillamani. Producers – Jeo Baby, Kani Kusruti, Payal Kapadia, Richa Chadha & Ali Fazal.”
Ali Fazal and Richa Chadda have previously worked with Kani Kusruti, in the film Girls Will Be Girls.
The makers giving a brief description of the film wrote: “When her younger daughter disappears in a graveyard, a single mother is forced to move to a conservative, religious, small town in Kerala, India, where she launches a desperate search for the child. Soon, a series of mysterious and disastrous incidents plague the region, and the townsfolk turn against her, convinced she has brought god’s wrath upon them. Now, she must fight to clear her name while coping with grief and struggling to care for her surviving daughter.”
The director is best known for Asanghadithar (The Unorganised), which was part of the anthology film Freedom Fight, now available on SonyLIV. The film was the first to highlight the largely undocumented struggle of saleswomen in Calicut for access to toilets at their workplaces. The anthology received a special jury mention at the 2023 Keralam State Film Awards, and in 2024, the University of Calicut was included. Asanghadithar in its Bachelor of Arts curriculum.
