Kunchacko Boban’s Officer on Duty is another thriller released in Malayalam. Directed by Jithu Ashraf, the film has been making headlines as it is scripted by Shahi Kabir, known for writing superb thrillers like Joseph, Elaveezha Poonchira, and Nayattu.

In Officer on Duty, Shahi Kabir has crafted a script with more commercial elements. As an ex-police officer, Kabir’s scripts have a raw feel, particularly when exploring police characters. This movie also delves deeply into the character played by Kunchacko Boban.

Synopsis

Harishankar (Kunchacko Boban) is a Circle Inspector in Kochi, living with his wife Geetha (Priya Mani) and daughter. A tough and harsh character, he is strict with his subordinates.

The story begins with Harishankar investigating a fake gold jewellery case. He encounters Chandrabanu (Jagadish), who is accused of selling counterfeit gold. As Harishankar digs deeper, he uncovers more layers, including a POCSO case. The investigation leads to multiple revelations and deaths, adding intrigue to the plot.

The first half focuses on the growing complexity of the case, with negative characters introduced and plenty of twists that keep the audience guessing.

In the second half, disturbing elements like murder, drug abuse, and rape are revealed, all connected to the fake jewellery case. The movie excels in how these elements are executed, making for a gripping experience.

The major highlight of the movie is its script. Shahi Kabir’s writing was brought to life by Jithu Ashraf’s direction. While watching, one wonders where the energy for the characters comes from. This is due to their well-crafted backstories and events.

The movie also addresses Harishankar’s mental health issues, stemming from a past tragedy. He returns to work and is faced with a case that connects to his past. This crucial element is executed effectively by Jithu Ashraf.

The film answers most of the script’s loopholes. The grey characters, who are drug addicts, are portrayed cinematically. Additionally, the movie includes a revenge angle, cleverly written like a psycho-thriller.
