Actor Nivin Pauly and director Abrid Shine have been summoned by Thalayolaparambu police on Monday, 28 July, for questioning in an alleged cheating case.
Although the notices were sent via WhatsApp and the duo has yet to respond, a formal notice will be issued on Monday. Police stated that the interrogation will take place at a time convenient for them.
The case, filed on 16 July, is based on a complaint by PS Shamnas, co-producer of the 2022 film Mahaveeryar. He alleges that after the film’s failure, Nivin promised him ₹95 lakh and a stake in the upcoming Action Hero Biju 2.
Action Hero Biju 2, a sequel to the 2016 police procedural comedy film was announced in February 2024.
Shamnas claims to have invested ₹1.9 crore under his banner, Indian Movie Makers, for the new project.
The complaint also alleges that Nivin and Abrid signed a ₹5 crore overseas distribution deal with Dubai-based Home Screen Motion Pictures LLC, misleading the company into believing the film was produced by Nivin Pauly Jr Pictures.
An advance of ₹2 crore was reportedly paid under this deal. The police have registered the case under Sections 406, 420, and 34 of the IPC, along with Section 175(3) of the BNSS.
Nivin Pauly earlier took to his social media to issue a clarification, which read: “We would like to clarify that the dispute has been under court-directed arbitration since 28.06.2025, with a gag order in place to ensure confidentiality. Despite this, a new case has been registered without respecting the court’s directions and by concealing the ongoing arbitration proceedings and manipulating facts. We will pursue appropriate legal action. The truth will prevail.”
