A couple of days ahead of the release of Barroz— the debut directorial of Mohanlal, the actor introduced a new character. But it is not a real person, but an animated character called Voodoo.

The film’s screenplay is based on Jijo Punnoose’s popular novel “Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure“. In the novel, Barroz protects Vasco da Gama’s hidden treasure for over four centuries. It’s his responsibility to pass on this wealth to a true descendant of Vasco da Gama.

Mohanlal plays the titular role in the flick set to release on 25 December. The other cast includes Maya, Sara Vega, Tuhin Menon, Cesar Lorente Raton, Kallirroi Tziafeta, and Guru Somasundaram.

Sharing the update, Mohanlal released a new promotional video, in which Mohanlal is seen interacting with the animated character as he is introduced to the audience.

He wrote: “Thrilled to introduce ‘Voodoo,’ my incredible co-star in #Barroz3D! Can’t wait for you all to see the magic unfold.”

Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas is backing Barroz. Santosh Shivan is the cinematographer and B Ajithkumar is the editor. Lydian Nadhaswaram is composing the music. Mark Kilian is composing the background score.

In August, Barroz has landed in legal trouble. A Germany-based Malayali author, George Thundiparambil, accused the makers of copyright infringement.

In his legal notice, George Thundiparambil mentioned that there are similarities between his 2008 novel “Maya” and the screenplay of Barroz.

The film is claimed to have been adapted from the “Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure” novel penned by writer-actor-director-producer Jijo Punnoose.

On the other hand, the sequel to Lucifer (2019), Empuraan directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran is set to hit the theatres on 27 March, 2025.
